Pain in the ribs and Costochondritis


When there is a stabbing pain in the ribs, it is not always due to an injury. You can instead of suffering from a condition called costochondritis, which is an irritation of the cartilage that connects rib and chest plate or sternum. This pain can frighten you-it's similar to angina, which type of chest pain that you receive from heart disease. It can also feel like a crack or break a rib.

Costochondritis is also known under several other names, including wall chest pain, costosternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia.

What can cause Costochondritis?

The most likely reason that you would would have pain in the ribs from costochondritis is a blow to the chest. Sometimes, you can also strain the cartilage of lifting incorrectly or something that weighs too much.

Another common cause of costochondritis is fibromyalgia. This is an arthritic which may occur in all parts of the body and can affect the top of the sternum too. Violent or persistent coughing can cause this as well as respiratory infections.

Costochondritis symptoms

Discomfort in the area of the chest in which the ribs are attached to the sternum is a typical sign of costochondritis.

There are two types of pain. First is a stabbing pain in the chest. The other starts as a stomach that becomes more intense. It is more common to feel this discomfort on the left side instead of on the right. That a healthy is uncomfortable or even painful and need to cough can cause intense pain.

People who feel such severe pain often think ribcage they suffer a heart attack in place of costochondritis. The main difference is that angina (chest pain from cardiac diseases) feels as if it comes from deep in the breast, costochondritis pain is more towards the outside.

How to treat Costochondritis

This will usually heal on their own time.

If the pain is exceptionally intense, ask the doctor to prescribe pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications. Over the counter medicines may also help if the pain is strong but not too difficult.
